First of all, I think this website is terrible. I hope nobody has been paid to build this, as it looks like it's been done by an amateur.
I think Poundbury is an awful, awful place. Its a complete eyesore. It does not in any way look traditional. And if Prince Charles and Leon whatshisname think Poundbury is modern living; then they are living in a dreamworld. Its a place full of expensive housing {something I believe Prince Charles said it would not be}, expensive shops, and ridiculously large roundabouts. But then I suppose being designed and built by a member of the Royal Family and an Architect it would be just that. Completely impractical.
When I first heard of plans for Poundbury, I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to be able to start a family near to Dorchester, but without having to live in a crowded town environment - and also without the expense of living in town centre. Imagine my surprise when I realise that its FIVE HUNDRED a month for a 1 bedroom, unfurnished flat above the ridiculously overpriced supermarket Budgens {which is ironic to me, as the name itself suggests cheapness}. What idiot would pay that much to live above a supermarket??? Apparently, lots of people do. I thought Poundbury was supposed to be a new development to help young people to get onto the property ladder - apparently not.
Oh, what happened to the days when Royalty used to live for their townspeople? Because now apparently, they only live for themselves {as long as we keep giving them the means to do so that is.}

Thanks for your message ;D The house prices In Poundbury were very low at the start, but the problem is that it has become such a popular place to live that market forces have made the prices rise well above what most people see as affordable. Many more builders are working on Poundbury now and homes are being built at a much faster rate, and I have noticed that the prices of many of the new properties are lower than they would have been a few years ago. The later phases of Poundbury are designed to have a higher number of 1&2 bed flats that would be ideal starter homes, and as they are now building at such a faster rate the prices should hopefully continue to fall. The problem in Dorchester as a whole is that the Dorset County Council is being told by the Government that thousands of homes must be built, and they must now decide where? As people don't want large estates of houses built onto existing small villages they must be built on areas of ground normally within a town bypass. Poundbury is designed to partly cover the demand in new homes in this part of Dorset, so when you see people trying to get the planning of high density housing at Poundbury turned down, this means less new homes, and even higher prices. The only other alternative is for other areas around Dorchester to be built on to make up for this shortfall, such as on the eastern side of the Town by the river Many people imagine that the prices at the Poundbury Village stores must be high, but I have always found them to actually be much lower than any other newsagents or general store in the town ;D Thanks again, and welcome to the Poundbury Community Forum ;D

A point on the cost of housing, I am a 24 year old in full time employment that doesn't pay great, I also have loads of student debt, yet my partner and I have bought in Poundbury. If you look at the cost of many new builds/ modern housing around the south coast to buy and rent you will actually find it is the same across the whole area not just Poundbury! (£500 a month is quite reasonable compared to some areas)!

our daughter has moved out of Poundbury and is paying £550 a month for her flat, that is also unfurnished, it's in a small village and not so many amenities! As for Budgens being overpriced, I thought it was quite reasonably priced, again, comparing with some village shops you can get lots of bargains down at Budgens! The website, this has been done by a resident out of his own pocket and he's done a fantastic job, put a lot of work into it

As an outsider I find Poundbury to be very well designed in architecture as well as general presentation. Poundbury has a lovely community atmosphere and it's nice to have events arranged for everyone which I especially notice and appreciate because I live in the suburbs where we are very isolated with no community events. I think the website is excellent and gives local people a place to comment which is great

I have some veiws on the poundbury development that I would like to share with you:
Poundbury is supposed to be a village seperate from Dorchester, yet it does not have the usual features that make a village and is so dependant on Dorchester that it is little more than a suburb of the town albeit a nicely designed one.
There is also a 'them and us' relationship between the people of dorchester and poundbury. Dorchester doesnt matter while Poundbury is everything. Take the newly opened 'poundbury bypass' for example. OK so it takes traffic away from the centre of poundbury which is nice for them but does not advantage the people of dorchester and may even bring more traffic into the town where other wise it would use the Bridport Road to access the A35 Dorchester bypass.
Finaly the buildings and other construction projects in the latest phase of the development are too large and out of scale with both the surrounding area and the rest of the development. It stands out for miles and ruins the local landscape as a result. The buildings are more appropriate for London than rural Dorset!

"Poundbury is supposed to be a village seperate from Dorchester" ahhh, well thats a whole big can of worms that very few people seem to really give a clear answer to, so Im not sure if I should add my views on that one The thing is that Dorchester as a town is held back big time by certain people Poundbury is yes under a bit of control by the Duchy but they are actually letting businesses grow and develop and this creates JOBS You go and ask any shop keeper in Dorchester and they will moan about the high rent costs, lack of free parking for customers, Traffic problems, Rubbish, Lack of promotion of the town. Then you can see why all the businesses and people are so eager to move up to Poundbury where they are made to feel more welcome and everything is moving forward ;D
