Hello Forum Members, I was wondering if any of you could please help me. I am entering my third year reading Geography and I am undertaking my dissertation, the subject of which is "The Rural Idyll to the Built Community". I believe that Poundbury is a perfect example of the purpose built rural idyll.
Therefore I was just wondering if anyone can tell me what they think it is like to live in Poundbury, it would be very useful to have an insight into life in this community.
If any of these questions could be answered, it would be very much appreciated.
How long have you lived in Poundbury? Where you the first person to live in your home? Why did you choose to live in Poundbury? Do you class it as a rural community? Is there a community feel? How is that created? Does Poundbury provide all the services (shops etc.) you require? If not where / how far do you travel? Is there a good public transport network in Poundbury? To where? What do you like about living in Poundbury? What do you dislike if anything, about living in Poundbury? What do you think of as the rural idyll / ideal rural community? Where were most of the residents born? Are there any social problems? Class conflicts? Do you think the housing style represent rural life? Do you think Poundbury stands alone or does it feel very much part of Dorchester? How much connection does Poundbury have with the surrounding countryside? Do you think it differs from a village that has been in existence for hundreds of years?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you!

phew, plenty of questions... here goes Lived here over 10 years, yes first family to live in our house, wanted to live here, it's not rural, there is some community feel created by a family who do too much for the estate! (You know who you are) very good shop on estate, but town within walking distance, pretty good bus service to town, Weymouth, Bridport etc.... I love my house and the convenience of it's situation, dislike? Some Dorchester residents saying it isn't the real Poundbury (it does seem odd to call it that when there was already a Poundbury) the media interest if there is a sniff of something going wrong with the idea of the estate...not sure how to answer the next bit, wouldn't have a clue where the other residents were born, but not many were Dorchester born from what I can gather, I personally, haven't had any social problems in the bit of Poundbury I live in, there doesn't seem to be any class conflict, however I wouldn't say it doesn't exist as I believe it does, Poundbury, in my opinion, is too big to be part of Dorchester now, and is becoming a separate entity, existing countryside? It is nothing like a village that has been around for hundreds of years, because it is too big to be a village!! Hope this helps, good luck!

no thought seems to have been give for the use of facilities such as the leisure centre, art centre and schools and playing fields which were fine for the size Dorchester was but now they have to be shared by the residents of the housing estate(please do not call it a village) that is on the edge of Dorchester. The Duchy of Cornwall seem very reluctant to give space and monetary means to build newer and better facilities for the use of all the residents of Dorchester but quite happy to plonk more houses which are out of the price range or those that have lived and worked all their lives. What has Dorchester really gained from this housing project? Added by Forum Moderator- A new School is planned for the northern edge of Poundbury and could be built in the next 5 or 6 years. The local Education Authority say that a new school is not needed in Dorchester at the moment, but money is ready and waiting. Construction of "The Great Field" park, in Poundbury should start next year. The building of a new Leisure Centre planned for Poundbury has been put on hold.
