Was a bit shocked to go past the Picture House Gallery yesterday and to see Closing Down Sale posters up at the windows! The website seems to be down as well - www.picturehouseuk.com

It is sad to see businesses fail - particularly arts-based enterprises which are so vulnerable in recessionary times. But I do feel that the Picturehouse did itself no favours in terms of its very limited range of artists and choice of material. I don't wish to get into a debate about 'what is art?' but frankly, work by artists like Caroline Shotton, Paul Horton, Sarah Jane Szikora, AJ Callan and Edward Monkton (et al) would have been better in the window of Clinton's Cards. I don't know what business arrangement The Picturehouse had as a 'Partnership Gallery' with the Washington Green organisation, but its concentration on work by artists like these prevented it ever feeling like a local gallery where one might have expected to find the work of Wessex-based artists. Like others, I suspect, I'd resigned myself to this, believing that the gallery obviously knew 'what worked' - and more importantly... 'what sold'. But clearly this wasn't the case. Very much a lost opportunity, I feel. My sympathy for those who lost their jobs with the closure of the gallery.

I agree with Nigel's comments about the Picture House Gallery. I would recommend those looking for high quality local art to explore the vibrant art scene that has emerged in Bridport in recent years. The first artists to settle in Bridport were the likes of John Hubbard, Robin Rae and John Miles in the 60's and 70's. The painter John Hubbard is a winner of the Jerwood Painting Prize, shows with the Marlborough Gallery in London as well as the Sladers Yard gallery in West Bay. John Miles is a widely celebrated photographer, and Robin Rae taught at Liverpool University in the 60's and Symondsbury Art College in the 80's. He also shows at Sladers Yard. The short-lived Symondsbury Art College attracted in a younger generation of artists to the area, which continued into the 90's with the Oakhayes Art community, bringing in the likes of Simon Poulter - who went on to set up the award-winning PVA MediaLab with Julie Penfold, as well as artists Kit Glaisyer, Douglas McDougall, James Ursell, and Dan Bendel. Kit Glaisyer stayed in Bridport and started the renowned St Michael's Studios complex in 1998, which now provides studios for 25 artists. Douglas McDougall went to London, currently exhibits in Copenhagen and has work in the Stanford College in America. Other interesting Bridport based artists include Trish Wylie, who exhibits her Pop Art paintings in London's Belgravia Gallery, Jon Adam who works at the Backyard Studios in West Bay and shows at the Artwave West Gallery in Morecombelake, plus sculptors Clare Trenchard and Greta Berlin, both of whom live in the beautiful Marshwood Vale just west of Bridport. One of the best ways to discover the local talent is to visit the hold regular Open Studio events help in venues across the area throughout the year. The main Bridport Open Studios event is on the August Bank Holiday, but there are also exhibitions at Easter, in May and during the Bridport Literary Festival in November. Many highly respected local artists now take part in these events, and it's extremely interesting to visit these artists in their studios. You can find out more information about many of the artists working in Bridport on the www.bridport.org website.
