GREEN-fingered campaigners are founding a community farm and garden in Poundbury in Dorchester.
Members of the Transition Town Dorchester (TTD) group are launching the initiative near the Weymouth College construction centre on Prince Charles’s dream development.
They are holding an open day on Saturday, June 19 between 10am for 4pm for people to find out more and suggest ideas.
TTD secretary Jenny Shackleford said: “We are keen to establish a community farm or garden.
“At the moment it is an open field. We want anybody who is remotely interested to come to the open day.
“There will be different displays for them to see and we want to hear what ideas people have.”
She added: “There all sorts of different things which could go there.
“There could be wildlife areas, recreation areas, salad production, a pond and some people want to see animals, such as chickens.
“We will need some kind of building for shelter, tools and teaching.
“We will need to ask people what kind of building they want.
She added: “It will be like a farm on a small scale.”
Other ideas for the two-acre site include a barbecue area, bees and fruit trees.
People will be able to register an interest at the open day. It is free to become involved and the garden will have disabled access.
The scheme is open to anyone, whether they are novices or seasoned gardeners, have their own garden or have no garden and want space to grow.
TTD has about 350 people on its mailing list and has smaller sub groups in such areas as food, youth and energy.
The Transition Town movement was set up in response to climate change, the approaching peak oil production worldwide and shift to the low carbon economy.
It says that food prices will rise as energy prices increase, and that there is a need to change the system of food production with more of a focus on local food production and self-reliance.
The group approached the Duchy of Cornwall about the plot at Poundbury and has leased the site on a peppercorn rent.
The produce will be grown communally rather than people having plots. But organisers say they will work out a system so people do get the produce that their efforts.
TTD also has an initiative to set up a community orchard elsewhere in Dorchester. It wants to conclude negotiations before naming the location of the site.
